As an educator, I understand the importance of teachers, standards, curricula, assessments and what contributes to a quality education. I believe in parents as a child’s first teacher, who know what will best meet their individual needs. As a dean of education in Colorado, I advocate for what works.
I believe in the power of education to change the destiny of an individual and a nation. I started out teaching special education in Douglas County and have worked for quality education ever since. What students learn in the classroom today become policies of the government tomorrow, so it matters.
This issue is not related to the work of the CO State Board of Education.
Beliefs influence decision-making. The work of the CSBoE is mostly about implementation/interpretation of education law.
In addition to being an involved parent in my local school and district, I’m the former owner and CEO of a private chain of language schools in Japan. As a parent to a child with disabilities, I know how to work with a team to overcome seemingly impossible challenges.
I’m a parent with school age children. I volunteer weekly in my church and children’s school. I advocate for my son with autism and all diverse learners. I believe parents should have a strong voice in our state’s educational system. Colorado needs less testing and more respect for professional educators.
